The Practical Test

The practical test is an assessment of your ability to drive safely and your knowledge of the Highway Code.

Booking My Practical Test

The time has finally come. The only thing between you and road freedom, is the practical test.

You can book your practical driving test if you`re at least 17.5 years old and have valid a provisional license*. However, you can book your practical driving test up to six months before your 18th birthday. If you apply for your practical driving test before 18 you will still have to wait until your 18th birthday before you can actually take your practical test. Do not rush into taking your test too soon – you should consult with your instructor to make sure you’re ready for the test.

*The provisional license is valid for 1 year. If you don’t pass your practical test within that period you will need to renew your provisional license again and pay the appropriate fees.

Paperwork

You’ll need to bring the following with you to the test:

  • Your identity card
  • Your signed Provisional Driving Licence
  • Your appointment letter

How to book my practical test

You can Book your Practical Test online or we can help you and book it for you. To book a practical test, you’ll need:

  • Your Provisional license
  • JCC account to pay for the test
  • Your driving instructor’s number plates – to make sure that the car is available.

On the day of the practical test

We will pick you up at the agreed time, usually around an hour before the test. This gives you the chance to ‘warm up’ and get any last-minute queries answered.

Please make sure that you have both your provisional license along with your identity card with you on the day. We would also recommend taking the appointment letter.

The practical test lasts about 45 minutes, which involves the below:

  • An eyesight check (requires you to read a number plate that is a certain distance away).
  • The “traffic sign” test: You have to be prepared and be able to identify as much signs as you can, like you did at the provisional license test. (Duration: 10 minutes)
  • Maneuvers: Reversing around the corner, turning in the road and parallel parking. You will also may be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise. (Duration: 10 minutes)
  • The actual driving test: It includes traffic signs, a series of directions and roundabouts. (Duration: 20 minutes)
  • At the end of the test the examiner will inform you if you have passed or failed the driving test. The examiner will produce a test report and describe any errors you made and if applicable, why you failed your test. (Duration: 5 minutes)

If you successfully passed the test, you will receive a certificate that you will use to obtain your driving license. Once you get your license you’ll be entitled to drive immediately.

In order to obtain your driving license, you will need:

  • A completed TOM 7 application form (available at the District Offices of the Department of Transport)
  • A passport photograph, which can either be taken at the District Offices of the Department of Transport or you can bring your own. For the latter, you’ll need to present two recent photographs (45mm in height by 35mm in width) that comply with passport photograph standards.
  • Your Identity card
  • Aliens Registration/Residents Permit and copy(s) (applies to non-Cypriots)
  • Provide evidence that you have been resident in Cyprus for six months, e.g. utility bill. If you don’t have this, or similar proof, you will need to attend the District Offices of the Department of Transport to find out what might be acceptable in your case (applies to non-Cypriots)
  • The appropriate fee

In whichever scenario, pass or fail, your instructor will usually drive you back home afterwards.

Good luck from everyone at LDS with your practical test!
